One Last Song
The Day Room is quiet today.
We have had some fun activities recently at J. Michael Morrow Nursing Home. L'Experience Soixante-Dix is a program sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and brought to Arnaudville by the Jacques Arnaud French Studies Collective. The residents are learning to read French children's books. Many of us, me included, speak French but I have never studied it. It is an opportunity that I am enjoying with my resident friends at the nursing home.
At 9:30 a.m. every Thursday, I am at the nursing home for either a planned activity like the Apostleship of Prayer Nonco Group which is the first Thursday of every month. Today was just my visit day. Since Evy, my youngest granddaughter is with us, she accompanied me. The residents do love to have young children around. Evy brought "Kitty," her stuffed animal and introduced her to the residents who also shared their stuffed animals with Evy.
As we entered the Day Room, I missed Mr. Lester Noel. He passed away recently and my heart was heavy as I remembered the last time I visited with him there. I was chatting with Dr. Carl Huval and he asked me who was the gentleman with the hat. I told Dr. Huval that it was Lester Noel and that Lester sang like his father, Damase Noel. Lester had always told me he could not see and he could not hear; but, he called from across the room: "Who is talking about me?" I walked over to him and said: " I was telling Dr. Huval about how you sang like your father." I started singing: "O Lord my God" and Lester picked it up and sang a beautiful rendition of "How Great Thou Art" which I shall not soon forget. When the song ended, everyone applauded loudly and Lester smiled proudly. I could not have imagined that it would be the last song for him.
It is unforgettable memories such as these that draws me to visit with these incredible people. There are many laughs along the way. This morning when I visited with Lillie Noto, she told me: "I am 97 now. I am beginning to think He forgot me." We had a good laugh over that one.
As Nola LeBlanc walked us to the door, we spotted Father Louapre working in his Word Search book. Evy was soon helping him. She quickly found dolphin and ocean in his word list and he was tickled with this five-year-old's experience with words. Considering the Little Mermaid, I was not surprised.
Another hour visiting at J. Michael Morrow had come to an end. We are planning a pet day so stay tuned. Remember, you, too, can visit anytime. Just introduce yourself and I promise you will enjoy visiting there as much as I do.
